Wisconsin Governor Urges Lawmakers to Legalize Cannabis

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers (D) recently added a provision in his proposed budget plan to legalize cannabis. This change would help boost the economy during the pandemic that the world still finds itself in almost a year later.

“When more than 80 percent of our state supports medical marijuana…and elected officials can ignore those numbers without consequence, folks, something’s wrong,” the governor said during his 2020 State of the State address. This statement came after Governor Evers’ attempt to legalize medical cannabis and decriminalize cannabis possession in 2019. It seems that Governor Evers is seeking more extensive changes when it comes to cannabis within the state.

Outside State Influence

As the year comes to an end, much remains to be seen when it comes to cannabis legalization on the state level. Governor Evers isn’t the only governor seeking to make changes in the upcoming year. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) tried for the past two years to legalize cannabis through the state’s budget. He seems to be looking to add that provision into the 2021 budget. Additionally, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo (D) tried to add a cannabis legalization request through a state-run program in 2019. Unfortunately nothing came of this measure.

The pandemic still envelopes the globe and many are seeking help for stress and anxiety. Lawmakers in the US appear to be leaning towards the legalization of adult-use cannabis for citizens. Whether or not these requests will be approved remain to be seen, but there is still hope for the future of legal cannabis in every state.
