Medical Cannabis Helps Migraine Patients, According to Study

In recent articles, we discussed how people can use cannabis in order to treat any number of ailments. These ailments include effects of Parkinson’s disease, organ damage, and, especially, pain. It can help treat pain from a number of different sources. In fact, it is because the reported effects of medical cannabis that some people have even begun to replace painkillers with cannabis. Additionally, patients can also treat one of the most common causes of pain, migraines. In fact, a recent study examined the use of cannabis to treat migraine patients. The study, which was more of a literature review, found that cannabis treats migraines.

Study

Researchers connected with the Larkin Community Hospital examined 34 scientific papers. They picked the studies by using the keywords: “Cannabis,” “Medical Marijuana,” “Headache,” “Cannabis and Migraine,” and “Cannabis and Headache.” In every examined study, the researchers found data showing cannabis could be used to treat migraines. They also found that the reviewed documents reported additional benefits. These are including a decrease in patients using painkillers and in pain intensity. The reviewers also found that there was a decrease in patients’ dependence on painkillers.

Discussion

This literature review, after gathering the data from the 34 different papers, found that it agreed with the previously mentioned studies. Specifically, it agreed with both that cannabis can be used to treat pain regardless of the source and that it could be used to replace painkillers.

This could prove to be a better choice for those suffering from migraines as there are many chronic conditions that can cause them or pain. By using cannabis instead, as the studies showed, they would have a more convenient and more efficient source of treatment. Additionally, since cannabis is natural, it makes it a good option to replace medications.

Also, it is thanks to the increased availability of cannabis studies that researchers are able to perform these literature reviews.  Hopefully, as researchers continue to examine the effects of cannabis, they will be able to definitively prove them.
