Majority of Americans Would Vote For Cannabis Using Politicians

As more activist groups continue to push lawmakers towards legal cannabis, the general population shows its support. In fact, more Americans now look for government officials to represent them who also support cannabis legalization. Recently, a national survey asked American voters how likely they are to vote for politicians who use cannabis or have used cannabis in the past. The results? Most Americans would vote for cannabis-smoking politicians.

Details

The survey, conducted by YouGov survey, interviewed 4,096 adults. Surveyors found 58 percent of Americans would vote for a candidate they agree with on most issues. Surveyors also stated voters preferred candidates who occasionally smoke cannabis. On the other hand, 21 percent reported they wouldn’t vote for a candidate that smokes.

68 percent of Democrats said they would possibly vote for someone who uses cannabis casually, while 15 percent said they wouldn’t. 47 percent of Republicans said they would join the aforementioned 68 percent, provided the Republicans agreed with the candidate’s positions.

History

This most recent survey came after a Louisiana U.S. Senate candidate, Gary Chambers, D,  released a campaign ad showing him smoking a cannabis blunt. During the ad, the candidate also discussed how the prohibition of cannabis affected races differently.

This isn’t the first time that a candidate attempted this. In 2020, Illinois candidate Anthony Clark, also smoked marijuana in a campaign ad. During his ad, he discussed his personal experience with cannabis along with the need for federal reform. That same year, a Democratic candidate from Oregon often discussed consuming and cultivating cannabis.

Meaning

With candidates openly discussing cannabis legalization to their promotional ads, it shows how the general public’s view is more accepting of cannabis. In fact, another survey conducted recently showed a majority of voters would prefer to live in pro-cannabis areas. This becomes even more important as cannabis has now become one of the country’s largest crops. Regardless, this means that cannabis-smoking politicians may find it easier as they run for office.
