Lawmakers Pushing for Urgent Update from Biden on Marijuana Pardons Prior to Holidays

With the holiday season now in full swing, those that support changes in cannabis legislation are frantically seeking an update from the president. This update is specifically surrounding one of the biggest sources of debate: past nonviolent marijuana pardons. These lawmakers are hoping to push for the president to provide an update about these marijuana pardons. This is being done specifically for those that some of the lawmakers do not consider “criminals” so that they can enjoy the holidays.

Details

This isn’t the first time that activists have pushed for these marijuana pardons as groups in the past have worked to have them accepted. These groups include celebrities and senators who all believe that those with nonviolent marijuana convictions are wrongfully punished. In fact, it has been ten months since 37 congressional lawmakers sent their letter to President Joe Biden. They urged him to use his executive authority in order to pardon these people from the convictions.

Since then, the lawmakers have started getting impatient about others stalling in regards to these pardons. As such, they sent a follow-up letter to push for an update.

Stallings

In August, the White House claimed that the president was looking into doing exactly as this letter requested. However, at this time, there has been no signs of this happening. The lawmakers supporting these marijuana pardons have pointed out that there would be a lot of benefits for them. One of the biggest benefits include making it easier for those convicted to be accepted in areas where they are currently being stalled, like when buying a house.

Another Attempt

As the administration continues to not make steps either for or against the cannabis debate, supporters continue to try and push them into action. Time after time, the groups are having to send letters to the administration’s leaders, trying to accomplish this. This letter was only one of the latest surrounding the nonviolent cannabis convictions. Until something happens either for or against it, it will unlikely be the last one as recent history has shown.
