When it comes to studying CBD, researchers are more confident as to its medicinal properties. The researchers have already found that CBD can help with a number of different ailments, like anxiety and Parkinson’s disease. Now, researchers are looking into the possibility of using CBD to treat liver injuries in alcoholics. This is an important study because alcoholics are known for suffering from liver problems as a result of their addiction. However, the researchers have found that high-fat diets can cause liver disease.  As such, researchers recently performed a study to see if patients could use CBD to treat liver injuries the conditions cause.

Study

For the study, the researchers used a mouse model of a heavy alcohol drinker on a western diet as the subject of their experiment. Using the model, the researchers applied the ethanol and high fat/cholesterol diet to the model for eight weeks. This was done so that the researchers could explore the protective properties of CBD and the underlying mechanisms. This was done to examine how CBD affected the mice.

Results

The researchers found that CBD prevented liver steatosis, which is when the liver has too much fat built up inside it, and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals, oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of electrons, and antioxidants. Antioxidants, for clarification, are molecules that can donate an electron to a free radical without making them unstable.

Additionally, CBD helped to inhibit macrophage recruitment and suppressed activation of a pathway that helped to prevent cellular death. They also found that this could also help to prevent inflammation in the liver.

Discussion

The results of this study goes along with the results of other studies that also found CBD could help with the treatment of organ damage. It is the hope of activists that these studies will lead to researchers working to further prove the benefits of cannabis and cannabinoids.
