Understanding Terpenes in Cannabis

Inside the cannabis plant there are over 100 different types of cannabinoids. More common ones are Delta 9, which is what creates the sense of euphoria that consumers strive for. CBD, which has no psychoactive properties, is reported to have antidepressant properties. It also works as an anti-anxiety, sleep-aid, and an anti-inflammatory. Within these cannabinoids are also terpenes.

Terpenes

Terpenes are naturally occurring scents and oils found within not only the cannabis plant, but a majority of all plants. The three most common terpenes are Myrcene, Limonene, Linalool. These are the most common cannabis terpenes. They don’t only provide scents for consumers to enjoy. Many terpenes have individual properties to them that have different effects on people. When combined with cannabis, terpenes can enhance the general experience a consumer feels. And this can be with any cannabinoid, like Delta 9, CBD, or Delta 8.

Myrcene

This is the most common terpene found in cannabis. It offers an earthy, almost sweet kind of scent. Not only that, its reported to have sedative and relaxing effects by consumers. Myrcene is also found in, but not limited to, lemongrass, hops, thyme, and mangoes.

Limonene

The second most common terpene is Limonene. Limonene most commonly comes from lemons and other citrus fruits. It creates the citrus scent the citrus fruits are most commonly associated with. Consumers report limonene offers stress relief and an elevated mood.

Linalool

The third most common terpene is Linalool, which offers a floral, almost candy like scent, and most notably lavender flowers. Its said to have a sedative effect on consumers as well as anxiety relief.

Terpenes aren’t exclusive to cannabis. They are commonly found in several plants and fruits. But their added properties enhance the effects of cannabinoids, such as Delta 8. Delta 8 is a newly available cannabinoid for the general public thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill passed by the USDA. There are companies that uses cannabis derived terpenes in their products, called CDT vapes. This means the vape contains terpenes, like myrcene, limonene, and linalool, that come from cannabis. Once added, terpenes supposedly enhance the Delta 8 vaping experience.

The additive effects are a part of a theory, called the entourage theory, that states additives work with one another to help create a better experience. While this theory only has anecdotal evidence towards it, it does offer some positive experiences for people who say these additives create a better experience overall.
