The Importance of the “Cannabis in Common” Movement

If there’s one thing a majority of Americans can agree on, it’s cannabis. That’s why cannabis advocates and industry groups recently joined together, with some high profile celebrities like Seth Rogen, to launch the “Cannabis in Common” campaign. Recent polls show that more than 60 percent of Americans approve of legalizing cannabis. Currently there are 37 states that offer medical cannabis as well as 19 states which legalized recreational cannabis for adults.

In a campaign launch video, Seth Rogen explained that “despite what you may have heard, Americans can actually agree on something—and that something is weed. “You know who cannot agree on anything though? Politicians.

“With the Senate about [to] consider a landmark bill that would legalize cannabis at the federal level and wipe cannabis convictions from thousands of people’s records, their silence could end up being the difference,” Rogen continued. “But here’s the thing about elected officials: they actually spend most of their time worrying about getting reelected. So when their inboxes and their phone lines are blowing up with constituents all rallying behind something specific, that is when things actually start to happen.”

Additional Advocates

The “Cannabis in Common” movement, led by the U.S. Cannabis Council (USCC) has joined forces with Canopy Growth, Columbia Care, Cresco Labs, and Weedmaps. Furthermore, actress Sarah Silverman has joined as well. She even did voice over in a small animated clip for the movement’s launch.

“Americans can’t agree on anything, can we? Is it ‘gif’ or ‘jiff’? Are hotdogs sandwiches? Is wrestling a sport?” Silverman said. “Fortunately, there’s at least one thing most Americans have in common: more than two-thirds of us agree cannabis should be legalized, and we have a real shot at getting federal legalization done now if we speak up.

“If we don’t make a change soon, we’re settling for laws that disproportionately land people of color in prison,” Silverman added. “We’re leaving hundreds of thousands of jobs on the table and giving up tax revenue that can go toward education and other community investments.”

Importance of “Cannabis in Common”

But why is the “Cannabis in Common” movement important? With so many voters in favor of cannabis, it seems strange that politicians are against it. Having a common website with high profile advocates actively and continuously speaking out against the prohibition in place, more voters may take notice. A lot of politicians remain undecided or against legalization. The “Cannabis in Common” website allows voters to come to one place. There they can urge senators to vote in favor of legalization. Additionally, voters can get all the information they could need in one place.

The “Cannabis in Common” movement is a starting point for legalization and change. This could open up and change the way advocates move forward with issues and concerns in the future. As more information becomes available, we will update you with the latest.
