The Endocannabinoid System

Endocannabinoids, not to be confused with phytocannabinoids, are cannabinoid-like compounds in the nervous cells. They appear naturally within the human body. These cells exist all over the body and activate when the body is out of balance. These triggers can be experiencing a fever, an injury, or an infection. The endocannabinoid system provides physiological, emotional and cognitive stability to the body as a whole.

These cells are as part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). There are several different cells that contain these endocannabinoids, but 2 have been studied extensively. They are Anandamide (AEA) and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG.) These endocannabinoids attach to cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. These receptors, which cannabinoids like Delta 8 and CBD attach to, help create an overall peace in the body.

Body System

Endocannabinoids are found everywhere in the body. Though they most commonly appear in the brain and the nervous system. Other body systems endocannabinoids help to remain normal are: Cardiovascular system, Gastrointestinal system, Reproductive system, Skeletal system, Immune system, and Metabolic system. Endocannabinoids are also responsible for stimulations of other systems like: appetite, memory, stress and pain regulations, mood, sleep, and addiction.

Once the endocannabinoids process within the various systems, enzymes break down the endocannabinoids. Fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) breaks down AEA and Monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) breaks down 2-AG.

Continued Research

So, what does all these words mean? Endocannabinoids are within the body to continue to bring it to balance. But there is still much that scientists don’t understand about endocannabinoids and what they’re true purpose is within the body. Some studies show a deficiency of endocannabinoids could possibly be why the body becomes ‘thrown off’. Especially with diseases such as fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome.

Because of these suggestions, more research needs to happen on the benefits of endocannabinoids within the body. In addition, research is happening on the potential use in a therapeutic sense. But until then, endocannabinoids are still important and very present to make sure the human body runs smoothly.

There are still several questions surrounding endocannabinoids and research is ongoing. When more information becomes available, we will update you with the latest.
