More Employers Dropping Drug Testing Requirements

As more groups seek to cause the changes in regards to the cannabis legislations, employers are seeking to cause some changes as well. One of the slowest changes that have been taking place is the drug testing requirements with different employers. Due to the differing cannabis laws between states, various organizations, especially ones that are in multiple states, are divided over whether or not they should follow suit. One of the organizations that have already dropped drug testing is Amazon.

Details

More employers are abandoning drug testing requirements. In fact, a recent survey, which the Manpower Group performed, looked into how many companies are doing this. They surveyed people from over 45,000 companies in both North America and Europe. They found that nine percent of those surveyed had eliminated job screenings or drug tests. The companies are removing these requirements in order to either attract or keep their employees. 69 percent of those surveyed reported that they have been having difficulties with filing staffing positions. In fact, they reported suffering from a 15-year high of these difficulties.

Past Attempts

Amazon removed the marijuana drug testing. They also reinstated eligibility for former employees and applicants who’s results either terminated or deferred them due to these screenings.

Additionally, lawmakers in a number of states, specifically Nevada, New Jersey, New York, and Montana, have created new policies that limit employers’ ability to pre-screen their applicants. Council members in a number of municipalities, like Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., have also attempted to do the same.

The reason for these changes is due to the limitations surrounding the drug testing, specifically urinalysis. These tests only indicate that the products are in the subject’s body tissue. At the same time, it doesn’t reveal any abuse or addiction. Additionally, it doesn’t reveal recency, frequency, amount of use, or impairment on behalf of the subject.

Future Benefits

With these companies now changing their policies in response to the cannabis laws, more people will have options in terms of potential employers. In fact, those that have been denied employment because of their past use will now have a second chance. As more people start to show their support for cannabis reform, more employers may start to follow these ones as well.
