Congress Sending a New Bill Focused on Consumer-Level Cannabis to President Biden

With more lawmakers looking to push cannabis legalization forward, some are working to improve the chance to study its effects. After all, with scientists looking into the potential benefits of cannabis, they can help to clear the path for a more comprehensive legalization of cannabis. However, the law has limited these scientists in their studies. This is because the law only allows them to study research-specific cannabis products. Lawmakers are pushing forward a new bill that will change that situation, focusing on consumer-level cannabis.

Details

On Nov. 5, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a new infrastructure bill that includes provisions aimed at allowing researchers to study the actual quality of products customers purchase from dispensaries. This new legislation would also encourage cannabis-legal states to educate people on impaired driving.

With these new stipulations, the bill would both allow researchers to actually study the effects of the consumer-level cannabis, but also pave the way for consumers to safely use them.

Past Attempts

This isn’t just the first time that Congress has worked to make changes surrounding cannabis use. In fact, past Senators and Congressmen have pushed for some new legislation to improve banking surrounding the cannabis industry. However, they are still divided over whether to focus on the banking improvements or the comprehensive legalization. Additionally, lawmakers also recently passed a Republican-led bill that would also push more towards major changes in regards to the legal status of cannabis.

Hope

It is the hope of activists that at least one of these bills will help to push legalization forward. While many states are allowing recreational and medicinal cannabis use, there are many limitations on both purchasing and studying it. Researchers have actually pointed out many of these limitations. As a result, they made very apparent. Specifically, the FDA pointed out that, at this time, the researchers are limited in that they are not examining what the customers will actually use.
