CBD Helps Treat SARS-Cov-2 by Inhibiting Cytotoxicity and Inflammation, Study Says

With more researchers looking into the potential benefits of cannabis-based products and the pandemic still going on, it isn’t surprising that some researchers are looking to see if there is a way to treat the disease with these products. As such, a study published Oct. 12 described a study that researchers performed to examine this possibility. Specifically, they looked into the idea of treating SARS-Cov-2, or coronavirus type 2, with CBD. In fact, this is only the most recent study to try and see if this cannabinoid can help to treat the ongoing pandemic.

Study

In order to study the effects, the researchers infected cell cultures with SARS-Cov-2. They then added CBD to the testing group in order to look at the reactions. They tested the cytotoxicity and immune responses of the testing cultures.

Results

The researchers found that there was, in fact, an effect from the introduction of CBD. The immunoblot analysis, which was how the researchers tested the immune response, showed that CBD reduced all of the analyzed proinflammatory markers. In other words, the researchers’ test showed that CBD reduced the inflammation that comes with the disease. This would help in the treatment of the disease. Additionally, while the researchers used the immunofluorescence analysis, they found that there was a reversal in the disease’s cytotoxic effect. In short, the researchers found that the cell-killing effect that the disease had was reduced by the introduction of CBD. This means that it was a powerful inhibitor.

Discussion

With the results of the study shown, it further proves those demonstrated by others that CBD can, at least, help to augment treatment of the coronavirus. In fact, it has been shown to help with these same symptoms in patients with other diseases, like HIV. It is the hope of activists that as more studies show the potential benefits of cannabis products, more researchers will take the opportunity to further research it.
