Cannabis Use and Obesity Traits

Researchers have begun to look at the different aspects that cannabis can offer. One of these aspects is the connection between cannabis use and obesity traits. The researchers specifically studied the obesity trait of body weight. Researchers performed a recent study that examined this potential connection. They found that there were conflicting answers about the subject.

Studies

The first study examined the connection between cannabis use and obesity traits. Researchers running the study examined cannabis’ appetite-enhancing effects and its effect on the body mass index. The researchers found that the low-weight subjects experienced more of the appetite-stimulating effects. Additionally, they found that marijuana users typically had lower body mass indices than nonusers.

Another study examined the connection between lifetime cannabis use and obesity traits, specifically focused around the body mass index. This group of researchers studied almost 200,000 people of European descent. They then looked for any connection between cannabis use and body weight. According to this study, there wasn’t any correlation between the two variables.

Results

Due to the conflicting reports of the two tests, it cannot be definitively concluded if cannabis use has any effect on the body mass index. However, the two studies seem to agree that cannabis use and obesity traits are not connected. As such, researchers need to perform more in-depth, scientific experiments in order to demonstrate any actual results of this lack of connection.

Discussion

In order to more definitively show this, scientists would need to study the actual effects of cannabis on a person’s body mass index. At this time, the studies were more of surveys seeing if noncannabis users were more obese than users. However, in order to state one way or the other, researchers would need to study the process that causes this connection if there is one. With any luck, as governments open more to the idea of using cannabis, scientists will be better able to study its benefits.
