Cannabis Can Manage Lower Back Pain and Comorbidity Symptoms, According to Study

There have been multiple studies that have shown CBD and cannabis can help to treat pain of all kinds, even pain that comes as a result of an underlying condition. For example, cannabis has already been studied to affect opioid use, meaning that it could be a replacement as a painkiller. However, there haven’t been many studies that showed cannabis’s effect on comorbidity symptoms and pain to go along with it. As such, a recent study looked into that. This new study found that cannabis could be used to treat all of these symptoms. This leads to prove that it can be used by those suffering from multiple conditions.

Explanation

For those unfamiliar with the term, comorbidity symptoms refers to those symptoms that come from multiple conditions. For example, if a person is suffering both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s symptoms, then it would be comorbid.

Study

This new study involved three independent researchers running a review using predetermined keywords. After they applied inclusion and exclusion criteria, which the authors didn’t discuss in the article, the researchers analyzed 23 articles. Note that these are using other researchers’ works and consolidating their results to make an overall point.

Results

The researchers, through the studies, found that there were significant and insignificant effects by cannabis on lower back pain. There is conflicting evidence as to cannabis’s effect on anxiety and insomnia, which are two comorbidities of lower back pain. However, the different studies showed that patients could use cannabis to manage lower back pain and comorbid symptoms. What these results mean is that cannabis has the potential to be used to manage or treat lower back pain. It could also help the additional symptoms that go along with it.

Discussion

While this study was more about consolidating rather than giving new information, it does show that there is some evidence that goes along with past studies. Since each of these past studies examined other cannabis research, it shows that researchers can use the results as a way to prove cannabis’s benefits. However, this study also clearly shows that researchers need to perform more studies in order to better understand cannabis’s effects on lower back pain and the subsequent comorbid symptoms.
