Cannabis and Male Sexual Function

With the wider acceptance of cannabis across the globe, research into its potential advantages and limitations is becoming more feasible. One worry has been the potential connection between cannabis and male sexual function. This is specifically regarding the preconceived notion that it causes erectile dysfunction. According to a study published this past June, cannabis has no significant connection with the “deleterious effects on male sexual parameters.”

Study

The study ran from 2008 to 2017. Researchers divided 7809 male participants between cannabis and non-cannabis users. According to the results, cannabis users had a higher mean sexual health inventory for men. For clarification, the sexual health inventory for men is a scale widely used to screen and diagnose men for erectile dysfunction. Additionally, they had a higher mean serum total testosterone, which means they have high testosterone. However, they also found that there was a higher rate of positive Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male scores. The deficiency means that they are suffering more from conditions usually connected with age than others of their age group. This means that cannabis use is not significantly connected to male sexual parameters.

Results

The problem with this study is that, like with others before it, the data tends to conflict with itself. This makes it difficult to definitively say either way which is right. As such, like with the other studies before, it is important to continue examining the effects of cannabis on people to fully understand its effects.

Understanding

In order to fully understand whether or not cannabis affects men in such a way, researchers need to perform other tests in order to see if there is a connection between cannabis and male sexual function. While this most recent study does suggest that there isn’t an overlap between cannabis users and those suffering from erectile dysfunction, we will need to know for certain before it becomes more available. However, this could mean that the stereotype that cannabis causes erectile dysfunction could be false.
